About

I see control systems everywhere—not dead people, like the little boy in The Sixth Sense—but systems. The difference is that I’m not the only person, or small group of people, who can see systems. We all can. Are they real? As far as human beings are concerned, they are.

We see natural systems: star systems, weather systems, river systems, biological systems, and many others. We invent human systems: government, communication, transportation, and many others. We have very little control over natural systems. However, that doesn’t stop us from trying to control them with systems of our own.

We also try to control each other. We distinguish between positive and negative control of other humans by the words we use. If we see it as positive control, we use words like influence, educate, lead, encourage. If we see it as negative control, we use words like manipulation, gaslighting, propaganda.

I taught science to teenagers in the New York City public school system for thirty years. Scientists see systems everywhere. They use control techniques to understand the natural world. I did my best to teach scientific control techniques to my students. However, neither I nor my students were ever taught the many ways in which humans control other humans for good or evil.

I have had to educate myself out of ignorance, innocence and naivety. Now I would like to share what I have learned and am still learning about the positive and negative control systems and techniques that humans use for and against each other.
